Twitter Expands Tweet Length to 280 Characters

It’s official! Twitter’s longer character count is now rolling out to all users, allowing them to tweet out messages of up to 280 characters instead of 140 characters. When Twitter first announced the possibility of character expansion, a select group of Twitter users were given the ability to double the length of their tweets during a trial period.
While some were worried that their timeline would be clogged with longer tweets, Twitter’s data showed that users stayed under 140 characters most of the time anyway. Twitter also pointed to the benefits they found for using longer messages including that those tweets received more likes, were retweeted more often, and received more mentions. Users who used the longer character count also gained more followers and were more likely to stay on Twitter for a longer amount of time. Based on this data, it made sense for Twitter give every Twitter access to longer tweet lengths.
